Shimano uses a mix of different materials in the construction of the cassette: while the 10 small sprockets with the lowest chain wrap and highest load are made of steel, the two largest sprockets and the spider are made of high-quality aluminum. This load-appropriate use of materials leads to even wear of the cassette and also extends the service life of the chain. In addition, significant weight can be saved.
